Head hunter

Let’s face it guys. You always need some buying advice, and there’s perhaps no more treacherous and perplexing a buying category as headphones.

Cheap way out (below `1,000)
Buyers in this category are willing to shell out as less as possible for a working pair of sound cans. Here’s some advice — don’t. As a smart buyer, you need to remember that a cheaper product might work for you, and hence may seem an enticing deal, but a slightly more thought-out investment goes a long way, in sound quality, comfort and product longevity.
Our recommendations: For headphones, go for the Sennheiser HD 180 (around `800). They’ve got a nice cord, decent cans that cover your ear nicely, and great sound quality for the price. However, if you can go for earphones, look no further than the Creative EP 630 (you can find them at around `650) — a legendary pair in-ear earphones that provide amazing bang for buck.

Button-mashing extraordinaire
If you’re a gamer, you want nothing but the best; the top-of-the-line stuff that keeps you at the peak of your game. Unfortunately, though, not all gaming headsets are made equal, and the truth is that most are worse than you’d think. While the previous category still might be all that most people will ever need, if you’re a gamer, you know you just can’t do with that.
Our recommendations: On the lower end, we’ve heard good things about the Plantronics GameCom 377, which’ll retail for around `2,200. If you want true high-end, look at the RazerMegalodon, retailing at about `8,500.

Audiophilia-induced
This one’s pretty self-explanatory — the best choice to go for here is a pair with active noise-cancellation.
Our recommendations: There’s the JVC HANC250, which you can manage for around `8,000-9,000. Also, the Audio-Technica ATHM50S (`13,000) if you can a bit higher.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
