Health check on cellphones soon
Mobile phones have often come under the scanner for emitting radiations which cause health hazards. Concerned over health issues, the Delhi government has decided to make it mandatory for cellphone manufacturers to display the level of radiation emitted by the devices.
Experts feel this is a much-needed move to create awareness among users and share some shocking facts that many users have little, or no, clue about.
“Not many people know that if they’re using mobile phones for one hour at a stretch on a daily basis, the radiation emitted by these devices can lead to memory loss in the long run. Apart from that, they further predispose a person to development of gliomas (a tumour that starts in the brain or spine) and sometimes these radiations can also lead to migraine headaches,” says Dr L.K. Malhotra, senior neurologist at VIMHANS.
Adding to the revelations is a recent survey by the blue-chip Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University in Sweden and Wayne State University in Michigan, stating that radiations from cellphones reduces sleep, and causes headaches and confusion.
To this psychologist Dr Rajat Mitra adds, “The brain has a self-regulatory mechanism of functioning. Brain works on what is called the neural circuitry, which enables the brain to receive and release info. Excessive radiation interferes with this process and the brain loses its autonomy which results in loss of creativity.”
Throwing light on how radiations from your cellphones can affect one’s skin, Dr Vikram Singh says, “It can damage your skin as the heat emitted by the radiation can burn the skin. It can also affect muscles, bones and brain functioning. Brain’s electrical conduction is hampered by cellphone radiations. Some devices emit stronger radiation than others.”
Often cellphone companies opt for ones available at lower costs which is why mobiles are available at such cheap rates today. “This move will make companies more responsible towards what they’re selling and make the consumers aware about the product,” adds Dr Singh.
