Hello, sunshine!
Being young and carefree means not having to hesitate about spending time outdoors — be it trekking, beach bumming or going on a shopping spree with pals. No wonder sunscreen has become a must-have in the beauty kits of many a youngster. But few are aware of how to pick the right one.
This skin product has seen innovations lately. Earlier, sunscreens focussed on the issue of cancer-causing UVB. They are now also addressing the UVA factor that leads to skin ageing. Says Dr Chytra Anand, a cosmetic dermatologist, “Initially, all the research in the western world revolved around cancer and products offering protection against UVB rays. But now there is as much focus on skin-ageing UVA rays. Broad-spectrum sunscreens that offer UVA and UVB protection are gaining popularity”.
Choosing the perfect sunscreen is easy when you know what qualities to look for in one. A good sunscreen should have complete protection — against both UVB and UVA rays — thus protecting the skin's health, youth and beauty. “It should be hypoallergenic, tested on sensitive skins and non-comedogenic. It should be easily absorbed by the skin and suit different skin types, apart from being resistant to water and sweat,” advises Suhas K Vijayan, Product Manager, Vichy India.
Many youngsters would rather splurge on an expensive lipgloss than invest in a sunscreen, not realising that it’s a necessity. Tanvi Singla, Miss Asia Pacific World India 2011, says, “One must never forget to wear sunscreen even if he or she is too lazy to dab on moisturiser. There are spray-on sunscreens available that are non-greasy and perfect for every season. Every part of the body that is exposed to sunlight ages as much as the face, so apply sunscreen liberally all over.”
Even as less as 15 minutes of exposure to direct UV sun is enough to cause skin damage. But we all love a healthy tan now and then, and there are ways to achieve it. “Sunless tanning products, also called self-tanners, can give your skin a tanned look without exposing it to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunless tanning products are commonly sold as creams, gels, lotions and sprays. Professional spray-on tanning is also is available at many salons and spas,” says Dr Varun Katyal, cosmetic dermatologist, The Skin Centre.
