‘Heroism is larger than life’

Salman Khan’s latest film, Ek Tha Tiger is an action-packed film that would hit the theatres on Wednesday. During a press conference at Hotel Imperial, Janpath, the actor seemed all gear up to talk about heroism in real life.

“Hero is just not a lover boy in the films. A hero is someone who makes sacrifices for the country, protects his love and has courage to stand up for what he believes in. Being hero means having strong emotions; being hero is larger than life,” said Salman.
Salman surely believes in things larger than life. No wonder his films are full of action, romance and moments of laughter to make them a complete entertainment package. And Salman attempts to deliver a complete package because he wants people to go to theatre to watch films.
“I don’t want people to get depressed after watching a film or stop going to theatres. I want films to do well and live up to everyone’s expectations,” he said. Of course, no other actor has been able to pull the crowd like Salman recently. He has been called Prem, thanks to his lover boy image. Then he became popular as Radhe and many had their hair grown long and straightened to mimic him from film Tere Naam. With Chulbul in Dabangg, Salman crossed all levels of popularity. And now he is larger than life, he is a Tiger.
So what makes Salman so popular? “I have no idea why people are liking me so much. But if they are, then I must have done something right,” says Salman.
The actor is always in news. And most of the time for wrong reasons. So what keeps Salman making headlines from making crores in films to hitting Katrina Kaif with a stick? “Jab dhamal hoga to babal bhi hoga (if there are sparks, there will be uproar as well),” quips Salman who seemed totally unfazed by the controversies surrounding him.
However, the controversy erupted when family members of a deceased agent of Indian Intelligence agency, Ravindra Kaushik, claimed that the film was inspired from Kaushik’s case seemed to disturb him and director Kabir Khan both. “Some people just want publicity. It’s a fictitious story about Tiger, an undercover agent sent to Pakistan, who while battling the dark world of intelligence and espionage falls in love with Zoya (Katrina Kaif),” says Kabir.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
