Hunt for Sam and Carrie begins
Sex and the City fans are gearing up for another adventurous journey with Carrie Bradshaw. The popular series is getting rebooted with a prequel — The Carrie Diaries. It will be the story of Ms Bradshaw, when she was struggling as a young writer. Along with her only one of the other three girls — Samantha Jones will be seen in this prequel. But the big question is who among the actresses will be cast as the iconic Carrie and Sam.
Mary-Kate Olsen, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Elizabeth Olsen and a few other PYTs from the industry have been shortlisted for Carrie’s role. But what’s even more interesting is that Blake Lively has apparently been shortlisted for both Carrie and Samantha’s roles. But it isn’t an easy choice to make, particularly with the glam set who seem to be quite choosy about who plays what role. “It is difficult to identify new faces with the characters we have grown up with. Among the shortlisted names, Blake is more of Carrie. She can’t play an OTT character like Samantha,” says actor Samyuktha Hornad.
While Carrie’s character needs someone who looks intelligent, somber and vulnerable, Samantha is diagonally opposite. “Miley Cyrus is bland. She can never be the edgy Carrie Bradshaw. Elizabeth Olsen could be close but not sure if she can be amazing. Parker worked because even in real life she is just like her reel character. She is always ahead of the usual fashionistas,” says designer Ritu Pande who thinks Blake could be very good as Samantha. Samantha’s bold portrayal of sexuality is something that needs to be replicated with a sense of fearlessness. “Her character requires that panache and uber feminity that only Lively can match. And also they need to find someone who is equally desirable to men!” says Ritika Sadhwani, a hotelier.
Similarly casting a young actress as Carrie Bradshaw is a tough task. And Lively remains the hot favourite for Carrie’s role too. “An actor with a very eclectic sense of fashion can be Carrie. I think Blake could be as good as Parker. She is every designer’s muse,” says Ayesha Basith, a socialite.
It definitely seems like Lively is a favourite choice among the city’s glam set. But there are others who differ. “Elizabeth Olsen looks like the younger Carrie,” says model turned entrepreneur Lakshmi Rebecca. Seems like Miley Cyrus is nowhere in the picture.
