‘I don’t have any regrets’
The super suave Kabir Bedi will be seen on the small screen with the new show Buddha, based on, as the title says, the life and times of Lord Buddha. Kabir says the show, in which he plays the sage who predicts that Buddha will go on to be a spiritual leader for the world, is close to him for personal reasons as well.
“My mother is a Buddhist and she spent 15 years of her life in Tibet. I also spent two years in Burma, so this is something I’m very close to,” Kabir said, at an event in Mumbai, which was organised to introduce the cast members of the show.
Kabir says his track in the show required him to commit only about 10 days of his time, which is why he was able to take it on. “I won’t be able to commit to any other projects for at least a year,” he explained. “I am already doing a show for Aaj Tak, Vande Mataram, and a similar series for Headline Today that’s called Guns and Glory. I’m also on a theatre tour in Canada through October and November this year, and then I’ll be releasing the DVDs for Sandokan in Hindi and English in January next year.” Also on the anvil is a Hollywood film that Kabir doesn’t share details about.
The actor says he has a great love for television, especially since some of his greatest successes were made possible by the medium. “The biggest success of course was Sandokan, then Bold and the Beautiful and Dynasty…” Kabir — among our early “crossover” stars — recounts. Today, he enjoys watching American TV shows, although he says he doesn’t much follow reality or dance shows.
Kabir says experimenting with various mediums continues to give him a thrill, which is why he hasn’t committed to a full-length role in a television series, as they consume all your time.
His flamboyant personal life is the subject of as much discussion as his acting career. Ask Kabir about it and he replies simply, “I think I’ve had an interesting life. I’ve done films, TV, theatre, married. I don’t have any regrets — which I think is more than (many) can say.”
