‘I knew acting was my calling in life’
A British actor, well-known for a number of roles, especially for his stint in The Devil’s Double, Akin Gazi will soon be seen in Desert Dancer, a biopic, by Richard Raymond. Talking about his stint in Hollywood and other film industries, Gazi says, “I’m currently playing the lead role in a BBC drama called Undertone and have just finished playing a supporting role in a new feature film. The business is not just about Hollywood. Creativity, imagination and filmmaking don’t happen there only. I’ve worked in European as well as Middle Eastern productions, both of which I have thoroughly enjoyed.”
So what urges him to say yes to roles? “The role and the script has to interest me creatively. Sometimes it’s about the money and sometimes it is for the fame. Films allow people to sit around the fire and collectively dream,” he explains.
Having always loved cinema as a child, Gazi believes that it helps you stretch your imagination. “I think the best and worst films are made in Hollywood. I loved Beasts of the SouthernWild and Silver Linings Playbook. I believe American cinema can’t be ignored,” he says firmly.
A great pretender, acting came naturally to him he says. “I knew it was my calling. I wrote one man shows and made few short films, casting myself of course. My ego was big enough to believe I could be a film actor so I found an agent and persevered until I was cast in The Devil’s Double,” he reveals.
