‘I love people-watching’

Life has come full circle for Lily Collins. One of the first auditions she gave in Hollywood was for the role of Bella in the Twilight series. Of course, she didn’t get to do that role eventually but soon will be seen portraying the lead role in a similar franchise. Collins is gearing up for her supernatural fantasy flick The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones based on the first book of the famous The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. For long she been known as her famous father, musician Phil Collin’s daughter. Lily Collins is set to change all of that soon!
“In The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones I play Clary Fray, a 15-year-old teenager living in Brooklyn who suddenly begins to see startling and seemingly impossible things. Her mom disappears after a violent struggle. As she searches for her mother, Clary begins to uncover the dark secrets and threats in the hidden world of the shadowhunters and angel-human warriors who have protected humanity from evil forces for centuries,” says Collins.
Lily reveals that Cassandra Clare gave a thumbs up to Lily for the role because she looked exactly the way Cassandra had imagined Clary to be. She feels there are a lot of expectations surrounding her and it has proved to be a challenging project. Collins has been acting from a very early age. What is it about acting that fascinates her? “I have always enjoyed people-watching and I think that’s the best acting class, just observing others interacting. I’ve always just been a very analytical person when it comes to human nature and am fascinated by that because you never know what you can learn or use for your next role,” puts forth Collins.
Lily’s stock has been on a steady rise over the past two years with her memorable role of Snow White in Mirror Mirror. Talking about playing the character of Snow White, Collins says, “Just imagine playing the character from one of the fairy tales you have grown up listening to! It was like a dream come true for me!”
For The Mortal Instruments Collins had to do a lot of action and stunt performances. “I love action and I never thought that I would be doing stunts in movies. We had about three months of physical training beforehand, then during filming we practised the sequences with instructors at five in the morning everyday,” says the 24-year old actress.
Post the supernatural film, Collins will be seen playing the same character in the sequel of the film, followed by a romantic comedy titled Love, Rosie.
Diverging slightly, we find out whether she is aware of Bollywood. “I have sung and danced in Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror and I think I will gel quite well into Bollywood. I would like to give it a try sometime. However, I’m not very well-versed with the people who work in it or its output. I would have to find out a little more about it,” she finishes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
