I’m a Punjabi kudi at heart: Kulraj

Kulraj Randhawa, who debuted in last year’s surprise superhit Yamla Pagla Deewana, is back with Chaar Din Ki Chaandni, which released this weekend. Kulraj played the female lead in the Dharmendra family venture, but was thoroughly buried under piles and piles of brawny adrenalin the Deols bought with them. But she is back, and in a similarly Punju venture, this time opposite Tusshar Kapoor.
She says she considers herself fortunate to work against such famous personalities. “Dharamji is actually a legend by himself, and you can’t compare anybody with him. Each moment with him was a learning experience. Sunny too is very respectful of people on the sets, while Bobby is a fun loving person who livens up the mood on the sets,” she reminisces. “Tusshar, meanwhile, became a good friend on the sets. He is a hard-working person who likes to get into the skin of his character.”
But the fact that her very first film turned out to be such a massive hit may prove to be a doubled-edged sword, raising the audiences’ expectations from the young actress. “More than the pressure though, it is anxiety over whether people will give me the same love and respect again,” she says, adding that she remains confident about CDKC as well.
And that shouldn’t be too difficult considering the character she is playing is once again of a Punjabi girl. Was that a conscious decision? “It was just a coincidence though, and one the script demanded. And moreover, I am a Punjabi kudi at heart, one who has been brought up in a Punjabi family,” she says.
But much before entering Bollywood, she was a common feature in Punjabi films, as also television and modelling circuit. “The transition from model to TV to films in two languages was tough and involved a lot of hard work. But thanks to all that, I learnt that being focussed will help you achieve your goals in life,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
