‘I’m Saif’s princess’

Kareena Kapoor managed to steal the show at the launch of the book The Style Diary of a Bollywood Diva, based on her style and personality. Written by Rochelle Pinto, the book was unveiled recently. The glam diva sets the ball rolling with a freewheeling conversation about her style, husband Saif Ali Khan and her work.

We quiz her about her transformation from Bebo to the Begum of Pataudi and she says, “Fortunately, there was no pressure from my husband Saif or his family. I dress up just like the way I did before we got married. No one in my family expects me to be clad in heavy saris and chunky jewellery in order to live up to the ‘royal’ image.”
Over the years, Kareena has developed a certain image and is always associated with being glamorous, yet bohemian and free-spirited. Is that aspect of her personality still intact? “If you think I’m blunt and outspoken, you have to meet Saif,” she says rolling her eyes. “He speaks his mind and sometimes gives out too much information in the process. That’s when I intervene to balance it out,” says Kareena.
The couple courted for five years before settling down. Does time affect the romance in their relationship? “We don’t have to wait for a certain day like an anniversary or Valentine’s Day to give gifts to each other or shower each other with love. Now that we’re talking about gifts, since Race 2 is a hit, I hope Saif will gift me my favourite diamonds,” she laughs.
On the professional front, Kareena is looking forward to starting work on her newer lot of films. The actress shrugs off the rumour about Saif’s discomfort with her “item numbers”. Marriage might not have changed her lifestyle and work pattern, but it has put Kareena in a happier space. “Yes it has! After all I’m Saif’s princess,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
