‘I’ve earned respect on merit’

Anjana Sukhani, best known for her itsy-bitsy roles in Salaam-e-Ishq and Golmaal 2, is all set to break into the big league with Ram Gopal Varma’s Department. “I was following up with Ramuji for months. I was keen to work with him, but due to his hectic schedules, we were unable to make it,” says Anjana.
But the actress was adamant and determined to get a break in the RGV camp. “Finally when we met, we were in talks for Bhoot 2, which didn’t work out. That’s when he offered me Department.” Anjana is aware of the fact that her role in the film might not be as big as that of her co-stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt or Rana Daggubatti, but she is confident that Department will definitely set the ball rolling.
She doesn’t hesitate to admit that she was sitting at home without any work for a while before she bagged Department. “I wasn’t getting the kind of work I wanted. Most of the filmmakers offered me blink-n-miss kind of roles. Since most of the actresses were doing item numbers, I kept that option open. Honestly, I didn’t have any reservations about doing item numbers because I love dancing,” elaborates Anjana.
After a period of struggle, Anjana thanks her stars for the South films that came her way. She says that she has survived quite well without the backing of any sugar daddy. “I’ve approached reputed filmmakers for work. I’ve heard stories about actresses falling prey to the casting couch, but the people I’ve worked with have been respectful people. Thankfully, I’ve earned respect on merit,” says Anjana.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
