IPL inspires crime thriller

Cricket has inspired numerous creative pursuits including movies, television series and books. With the Indian Premier League managing to grab maximum eyeballs on the small screen, it comes as no surprise, that a sports crime novel is all set to combine the love for cricket and literature. The League, written by Rajiv Rajendra, is a story set in the background of a fictitious cricket league and has the makings of a great crime thriller.

“The timing of the novel was planned. I started writing it almost a year and a half ago after my first novel, Doosra, again based on cricket which was well received. We realised the timing of launch is very important. Doosra was launched around the last cricket World Cup and did well. So, we decided to launch The League, around IPL,” says Rajiv. Just like many of the current brigade of Indian writers, R ajiv also had a full-fledged banking job in Singapore, before he decided to combine two of his biggest passions-cricket and writing.
“It wasn’t a sudden switch. I was writing screenplays for theatres and enjoyed it thoroughly. Soon I decided to start my own consultancy firm and had flexible working hours. Hence, could devote more time to writing,” informs the young author. Based in the Persian Gulf, The League is the story of a special cricket spectacle, which is becoming sporting world’s fastest growing machine and its best kept secrets, can be revealed by the players, only at the cost of their lives.
“Writing fictions is fun. One can create interesting characters and experiment in style and format. I have also written non-fictional stuff, like a global finance book. But I enjoy the former more,” concludes Rajiv.
