It’s Paul the phenomenon
He is the octopus, who gave astrologers a run for their money with his accurate, match-winning World Cup predictions. Paul the Octopus is now a worldwide phenomenon and many consider him a bigger draw than football.
After his 100 per cent accurate predictions, (he even rightly foretold that Spain would win the final) his fan following has swelled to enormous proportions and he has been immortalised with a theme song by Parry Gripp (Paul, the Octopus), a phone application (Ask the Octopus) and Facebook applications (Ask Paul).
The Paul theme song, which has been posted on YouTube, has already got 484,000 hits and is on its way to becoming a viral hit. VJ Gibran is amused by the entire commotion. “I think Paul ridiculed the idea of all these men, who could predict the future. It’s like everybody’s saying, ‘hey, if Paul can do it, I can too,’” he says.
“There has to a reasonable explanation for this. Unfortunately, right now, no one cares. Is Paul really a prophetic messiah?” wonders Keerthana R., a student.
