It’s payback time

Take, take, take. Give, give, give. What do you think I’m talking about? Okay, we all take so much from the earth. How much do we give back? Actually, most of the time we do not know how to give back. Or what to give back, right? You must have been told or even read about erosion and climate change and ozone layers. While all of this is true, why not do something to help.
Something as simple as planting a tree or a sapling is better than not doing anything. Of course, the more important thing is to make sure that the sapling stays alive! So, if you plant your sapling somewhere where it will be easy to keep an eye on (like in your colony compound, or inside the compound of your house if you live in one) then they are more likely to stay healthy.
But to make the whole activity less boring (doing things together with friends or neighbours is so much more fun, right?), make it a joint activity. Have your own little Vanamahotsav or Tree Festival. Maybe you could make your birthday your very own Vanamahotsav. This way you’ll never forget and you can also plant a tree or sapling on every one of your birthdays. It will then be a two-in-one day! Wouldn’t it be nice to say to your friends many years later, “Hey, I planted this tree on my 11th birthday?”
Another tip, planting a fruit tree is a good idea. And a better idea if that fruit is something you love to eat! Wouldn’t it be great to eat fruit from a tree that you had planted? While all this might seem like great fun, it also means that the tree has to be cared for, watered and kept safe from monkeys (fruit), cows (leaves) and the weather. But it will be worth it — remember, you will be doing something instead of just talking about it!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
