It’s time to get warm
Just like how we humans, are sensitive to weather changes, so are animals. With winter still making its presence felt, more so during the evenings and night, the chill and the cold breeze leaves it aftermath effects on pets too.
“I’ve observed my dog frequently looking for warm spots, and I always find him cozying up on his bed,” says Sangeet P, adding, “The vet has asked me to keep a check on his nose. If the tip of his nose gets very cold, it’s always better to take measurers to keep him warm.” Dr Hemanth WA states that winter causes dryness and scaling among most pets, like dogs and cats.
“Apply olive oil or mustard oil. One can even give the animal cod liver oil, to drink. It does give a lot of relief,” he adds, “This weather also accelerates a few airborne diseases. And people talking care of boarding kennels should keep an eye out, as these diseases can be contagious too.” Cats too need to build up their energy blocks, “You can increase the amount of protein in the cat’s food in order to keep its fur thick and healthy. You can also feed fish oil,” says vet, Ramya K.
Most pets remain quite safe when in controlled environments, especially if they are indoors, says vet Lohit.
“One has to be cautious while taking their pet dog for a walk, and should use warm water to bathe them. Only those with less hair, or a thin coat, are easily affected by the weather and need special care,” he suggests.
Aquarium is not the only armour your fish needs during winter. The cold atmosphere has also led to the death of many pet fish. “Extreme cold can be fatal to fish. This is the time to bring in the heaters, and also keep a close vigil,” says Rohan P., who owns an aquarium store.
“The metabolic processes of cold-blooded creatures slow during winter, over feeding them might cause decay of food and harm the fish,” he adds.
Agrees Lohit, “Even if you have a pond, you can control the temperatures. The humidity and the temperature are two things that need to be constantly monitored.” Even rabbits need special care sometimes. “Keep your pet rabbit dry. Most breeds of rabbits have thick coats which are insulators against the weather,” says Rohan, adding, “Don’t let them get wet, and keep their cage clean at all times.”
So, get your pets to enjoy the chill, while taking that ‘little extra care’ to keep them warm too!
