It’s all about the family
You may wonder which school on earth has students walking shirtless on a school campus, like they did in the recently released Student of the Year – and you wish you could be there. A college campus in his Kuch Kuch Hota Hai made ‘Friendship Day’ a popular concept to imitate.
Karan Johar is, after all, a merchant of aspirations — he makes the audience want to be the perfect lover or friend, have a perfect family, go to a perfect school/college and dress perfectly. His movies may be the absolute antithesis of the Ram Gopal Varma brand of real, but Karan knows his audience.
And if any proof were required of this, three of his films will be screened at the Marrakech International Film Festival. “It’s an honour. I am most excited about Student of the Year being one of them as people will get to see my latest work. It’s incredible that Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam, which released in 2001, will be screened at the opening. And Agneepath, directed by Karan Malhotra and which I produced, will be screened on December 2.”
Though known for his larger-than-life cinema, Karan is open to exploring other interesting scripts. “I am a director’s man. It’s wonderful to see that movies like Gangs of Wasseypur, Kahaani and Vickky Donor are doing well and I would love to be a part of such cinema as long as I believe in it.”
Currently Karan is busy promoting popular Australian family drama, Packed to the Rafters. “It’s the first time that I am promoting a TV series which I am not a part of. It’s a series that I could relate to, it’s very similar to Indian values. And television has come out to be a very strong medium,” says Karan. Acting is the only thing he has not attempted. “I am hoping the directors within Dharma productions sign me on,” he says.
