It’s game on, two-gether!

Having done their studies from the schooldays to engineering together, not many who knew Maninder Singh and Bharath Belur raised even half an eyebrow when the friends launched a company, together, last year. Just over a year and half on, eyebrows are raised not only among those close to the duo but even by pundits. And why not? After all, their company, Zunaa Software, is all set to go global and put India on the world map, at least so far as iPad and iPhone gaming apps are concerned.

About the unusual name, Zunaa, Maninder explains, “Zuna is a Sanskrit word for growth and progress; we just added the extra ‘a’.” Bharath adds, “We started dwelling on this venture around May or June last year. We quit our jobs and took this up seriously.”
The fact that not many people give board games much thought when it comes to turning them into gaming applications gave the dynamic duo the idea for their venture. They were the only ones who decided to cater to iPhone and iPad users, and people have started taking them seriously, says Bharat.
If a business is to be sustained, they say, there has to be a good understanding between the partners, and the childhood friends have that aplenty. “We are like a family now,” says Maninder. Bharat clears the air about that ‘family’ business coming in the way of work, “We are very professional. Our work is designated and we make sure we do our work responsibly.”
Besides gaining national recognition, the duo has also been honoured with the title ‘Change Makers of Bengaluru’. About that, Manider quips, “We were nominated along with some of the best people in town. That in itself was an honour.”
While 2011 has been a very fruitful year for the duo, Bharath feels 2012 will open with a bang. “After the success of Zhao Cards, we have another product for the Web and mobiles that we will release in January,” he says. “Then there’s another product for the hospitality sector, which is all set for release two weeks from now.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
