John likes to keep it simple

Bollywood’s macho hunk John Abraham’s biceps are noticeably flexed up to match the steps of a first-time producer. The job is tough no doubt for this “desi boy” as the subject of Vicky Donor deals with a bold and an unconventional theme of sperm-donation.
“From the word go, we were determined not to use any cheap PR stunts to push this film up the ladder of popularity, because delicate concepts like these can provoke uncomfortable questions and buy undue media mileage. Our agenda was never to sensationalise the film or create a controversy,” comes an assertive reply.
A complete charmer, this desirable ladies’ man assures to keep his word when it comes to donating his own sperms off-screen. “Oh absolutely! Why not? But whenever I’ll decide to walk the talk, I’ll do it for altruistic and charitable reasons. There are a lot of childless couples who make a beeline for fertility clinics and are even shy of discussing their problem in public. This should be taken as an initiative to contribute towards the society within one’s capacity,” he says.
Coming back to his movie, John says, “Well, with two disciplined actors on board, a cerebral filmmaker like Shoojitda (Shoojit Sircar of Yahaan fame) helming the affairs and an association with his production house as well as the reputed Eros International, what more can you ask for! Obviously the output from this veritable tie-up will be something to watch out for.” But how did he zero in on the cast? “Well, Shoojitda had Ayushman on his mind from day one. And about Yami, he said that this ‘Fair and Lovely’ ad girl looks lovely on screen and that’s how she too was pencilled in. Both of them have talent and are hard-workers. Ayushman has, in fact, written and sang a beautiful song in the film called, Paani Da Rang. It’s been a pleasure to work with this set-up,” raves John.
How far has he been creatively involved in the filmmaking process? “Well, I did sit with the director to discuss a few pointers, and have been pretty active during the production. Later on, I took a dive into the marketing aspects which is definitely my strong area. And since I’m now able to judge the pulse of the audience, having been in this profession for about 10 years now, it was my natural urge.”
And does the directorial bug bite him occasionally? “Surely. And I do harbour dreams of wielding the megaphone some day, provided both my actors Ayushmann and Yami keep their dates free. I promise to be always available,” he jokes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
