There are very few designers who manage to turn around one’s personality through their clothes. Manish Malhotra is one of them. Be it his closest friend Kareena Kapoor or the newbie Alia Bhatt, Manish has a bevy of beauties hanging on his pearls of fashion wisdom.

The recently concluded Cannes Film Festival was a shining example of India’s eclectic fashion sense. Actor Ameesha Patel has even roped him in to help redesign her wardrobe and the dainty lass looked stunning on the red carpet wearing Manish’s creations.
“For the past seven-odd years, Indian fashion has been rooted to tradition. While tunics and gowns will always remain a classy style statement, it’s fantastic that saris, anarkalis, lehengas and sherwanis are getting equal attention,” he says. Manish is one of the most sought-after people to style the biggest celebrities in India. Every artist has a muse, and his is Kareena Kapoor. “Kareena and Karisma have been my close friends for years now. Kareena is easily one of the most fashionable stars we have today, and her sense of dressing is inherently classy. I love Deepika Padukone’s fashion sense too,” he says. He has also designed costumes for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) that released recently.
Manish feels a designer’s versatility comes through when he can effortlessly juggle his work. “I am working on 2 States, with Alia Bhatt where she plays a South Indian belle. I am giving her simple and elegant cotton salwars in light pastels.” He is also very excited about Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Again, which will show Sonakshi Sinha play a struggling actress. With the buzzing fashion scene, he says he has no time to breathe.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
