‘Kareena is a veteran now’

Her married life with entrepreneur Sunjay Kapur has been under the scanner for quite sometime now. But Karishma Kapoor is averse to talking about it. The moment there’s any mention of rumours related to her personal life, she smiles and says, “It’s better if you don’t go there.”

Her face doesn’t indicate that she is coping with a difficult situation. She maintains a calm demeanour and when asked about her life otherwise, she says she is enjoying it fully. “I’m enjoying every bit. Being a good mom is the most important thing. Family is the most important and beautiful thing,” says Karishma, who was in the capital to launch an animated show, Suraj: The Rising Star — the Indian version of Japanese show Star Of Giants that will be aired on the channel Colors. The show has been launched to mark the 60th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relationship.
Karishma got associated with it because she found it motivational and inspirational. “We see animated cartoons that are fun and sweet. But here, we are getting something more that will push our children to do a little better and get inspired,” she says, as she tells us that her kids Samaira and Kiaan like watching TV.
Not surprising, Karishma is as aware about what is happening in the life of cartoon characters — Sponge Bob, Doraemon and Chota Bheem — as her kids are. “They watch all the kiddy channels and I’m very well aware what is happening on the tube in these shows,” she quips.
Ask her about the film industry and the new trends she has witnessed there, and she quickly says, “I’ve not been following the industry too closely.”
But she is happy to see that different kinds of cinema are working well in recent times. She is happy that more women-centric films are being written and executed well. “Not that it’s a recent trend, as even I’ve done films like Zubeida, Fiza and Biwi No.1, but now it has become better,” she says.
Another thing that people have been asking her about is the trend of item songs in films. But she doesn’t find that question too appealing, as she feels that item songs have always existed. “Even I’ve been a part of so many of them,” she says.
But the mention of her sister Kareen in Fevicol se, brings a special gleam in her eyes. She says, “Fantastic she looks!” Ask her if Kareena takes opinion or inputs from her regarding work and she says, “I think she is quite a veteran now. She doesn’t need inputs from me.”
As far as her career is concerned, she is not in a hurry to do something big. Her film Dangerous Ishq may not have done well, but she wants to take things easy. “Doing a film takes up a lot of one’s time. Even if I have to do a film, I’d do it next year,” she says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
