A Kolkata connection for Audrey
When Audrey Hepburn walked into the opening frame of the 1961 film Breakfast At Tiffany’s wearing a sleeveless black sheath dress, little did the actress know that she would be setting a style statement that would be emulated by generations to come.
And even after her look in the film — the dress itself was teamed with long black evening gloves and a slender cigarette holder — became quite the talking point, few if any would have imagined that Audrey’s iconic dress would one day have an India connection. Designed for the actress by French designer Givenchy, the dress was considered a little too risqué for the big screen, so a copy of the same dress — but of an extended length — was finally worn by Audrey in the film. Years later, Givenchy would donate the original dress to the author Dominique Lapierre (who authored the seminal City of Joy) to auction off and raise funds to build a school for underprivileged children in Kolkata.
