Let’s get Ruffled

Just when you thought your date with outlandish fashion ended by revisiting the 1980s, the fashion gurus declare a penchant for ruffles. If you trust Oscar de la Renta, Gucci, Erdem, Givenchy with their latest line, this is what you need to add in your wardrobe. In the summer of 2013, ruffles have woken up to a super stylish existence, only their appearance is restricted to measured numbers.

Finding a substantial connect between frills and fashion, designer Sai Suman says, “Minimal frills or sizeable ruffle-trimmed collars are apt to give that perfect chic look. Slight ruffle on the collar of a smart shirt or crop top or just on the hem look smart enough to club along with trousers or even denims.”
Suman adds, “This season frills on blouses is a big trend. With small waterfalls of ruffles or layers of flounces, one can make tops look more upbeat. Frills and flounces can be placed on the sleeve and neck of the blouse to give it that complete chic look. Fortunately, frills look good with bright and fluorescent colours and they are equally comfortable in the pastel zone.
However, designer Pam Mehta feels that drape gowns can be accentuated and made more dramatic with the use of frills in the lower silhouette and hemline. “Remember this season ruffles are making the best fashion statement as a single entity. Their presence on a jacket silhouette is also a welcome addition.”
On the other hand, designer Jyoti Sharma’s ruffle story comes in a short and bright version. “Envision lace and frilly hemline on a super short dress or an off-shoulder can best qualify for the cocktail hours. Strike this style in passionate red and before you know, the ruffles’ kiddish connect is a long forgotten thing,” she recommends.
Whereas, designer Vandy Mehra finds frills more feminine than girlie, and suggests, “A solid colour, preferably metallic, is a safe option. Keep in mind, the frill should not be too flouncy or too voluminous.”
For designer Mini Bindra, the fabric plays a key role in bringing out the best effect. “The new usage of ruffles is standing out due to the delicacy of the lines and a variety of light fabrics like tulle, organza and chiffon,” she points out. Mini visualises her “it” look as, “Keep it simple and classy by slipping into a chiffon top in soft hue, a ruffled skirt and boots.”
However, experts lay down a few guidelines for sporting frills this season. “Wear a darker tone frill at the top to minimise broad shoulders and larger busts and team it with a lighter shade at the bottom. Avoid ankle strap shoes or Mary Janes, since the horizontal line of the frill breaks the natural long lines of the body. Instead, wear court shoes or ankle booties. And do not make the mistake of wearing a long necklace on a ruffle top. You don’t want to look too cluttered with a lot of things happening on your top,” cautions designer Sai Suman.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
