Light painters on a shooting spree

For taking a break from the mundane routine, one can choose to indulge in an evening of some offbeat fun. How about indulging in an activity of light bending, offered by a Delhi-based group Other Logic Experientials (OLE) run by two city youngsters — Ankit Monga and Nihar Mudgal, who believe in creating visual experiences through their Light Speed Delhi (LSD) sessions.

Talking about the whole activity Monga says, “The process is simple and involves an ingenious camera trick and is nothing but playing with light and creating fanciful patterns.”
Explaining further Nihar Mudgal, co-founder of Other Logic Experientials, says, “Light bending is a simple yet beautiful rendition of slow shutter photography, where a light source becomes your paintbrush and everything else becomes your canvas. Even your cellphone can become a paintbrush. It is all about using different light sources to paint shapes and create designs in air and capturing these designs through long camera exposures.”
OLE is a collaborative of professionals ranging from people from fields of advertising to techies among others who want to facilitate creative and fun expressions for everyone. Mudgal says, “We are a group of techies, artists, musicians and free thinkers. We love to create great experiences and moments of wonder and surprise. We develop our ideas and software indigenously, which makes our experientials unique and exclusive. We work with rhythm, sound, light and technology.”
The youngsters ditched their fancy jobs to take up this initiative full-fledgedly. Monga was a sound engineer and photographer and Mudgal had a degree in advertising and design. The two have been friends since childhood.“We began our journey when we got this fancy DSLR camera and accidentally captured a wave of light from a flickering candle in our room,” says Monga.
The duo aims to connect with the masses by creating interactive designs. “We usually conduct our sessions in Deer Park and Hauz Khas Village, since we think the graffiti in the background gels well with our light bending sessions. Even India Gate is a great place for carrying out our experiments as it is a hub of people from varying backgrounds and interests coming together.”
The sessions have people gathering at popular wide stretches in the capital, who bring along their own light sources and cameras, and capture varying patterns and shapes formed by light-bending. Monga shares, “Each light bending session lasts for three to four hours and whosoever wishes to attend the session can come and join us for free.”
OLE also organises other interesting sessions that include experimenting with light such as painting names, creating flying angels in the air and creating music from junkyard material like broken PVC pipes and used cylinders among others.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
