Lights, camera, action

Each one of us has a favourite animal/pet movie. Whether, it's the classics like Beethoven, Free Willy, Haathi Mere Saathi or the newer ones like Marley and Me, there is something extremely endearing about seeing animals on the big screen. So, when pet owners are asked what their favourite pet movies are, it is not surprising to see the bright glow in their eyes and the slight curve of a smile forming on their lips. There are too many, some say, thinking about the antics of their own four-legged and winged pets. But a clear favourite always stands out.
Ankeet Anand says he can’t decide between Hachiko and Marley and Me but soon ends up talking only about Hachiko. “I actually used to watch movies with my pet when I was younger but not anymore. Hachiko is my all time favourite pet movie. It’s the perfect story of a dog that’s completely faithful to his master. It brings out the true meaning of the saying, ‘dog is a man’s best friend,’” he says.
Bhan and Ruchika swear by Born Free and Free Willy. “Although these don’t exactly come under the genre of pet movies, they epitomise the relationship between man and animal. Both movies exude compassion and love for the supposedly ‘wild’ animals. They are truly evergreen,” says Bhan.
Devika who doesn’t own a pet talks about how Haathi Mere Saathi is a movie that every Indian of her generation must have watched in their childhood. “It’s an adorable movie, and I think the movie makes you love animals if you aren’t already fond of them.”
However, while there might be a large audience to this variety of movies, where pets and their owners share a special bond (and most times) with a largely emotional ending, there are those who don't like watching such movies. “I absolutely adore my pets, but it’s extremely difficult to watch these movies fraught with emotions and sad endings. I don’t ever want anything like that to happen with my doggies and me. And watching such movies will only make me think about such scenarios,” insists Pooja. In fact, she would rather watch animated films like Madagascar and even cartoons! “I absolutely adore Garfield! He portrays the character of a typical cat so well and it’s enjoyable to see such wit in an animal.”
