Lips don’t lie

You don’t have to be Angelina Jolie’s distant cousin or go the Rakhi Sawant way to get lips that stand out as your best feature. Make-up artistes say that sporting the bold lips trend just takes some clever strokes and a good sense of colour.
According to experts, the one thing that’s a must in every woman’s make-up kit this year is a bold lipstick. “And we’re not just talking about the classic red lipstick. But going bold includes even opting for a dark purple or hot pink shade. Apart from colours one can even go in for a play of textures,” explains Kanika Virmani, national creative director of a premium cosmetic brand.
The bold lips trend has been making waves on the fashion runway and celebs like Sonam Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Deepika Padukone, etc. have been seen sporting this too. “A bold lip colour instantly attracts attention and is very powerful. One can use the colour and technique to their advantage to appear feminine or strong as they like,” says Shailaja Dubey, a stylist and senior make-up trainer. “Since it sends out a message of authority instantly, one needs to have a personality to reflect that,” she adds.
With lips that catapult one into the spotlight instantly, if this trend isn’t executed well one might end up looking tacky. Says Shailaja, “The first thing one needs to do is ensure their lips are clean and exfoliated otherwise bits of colour will stick on to the dry areas and make lips look chapped. The easiest thing to do is apply some moisturiser or foundation just before applying the lip colour.” Another thing that can’t be left out is the lip liner. “This helps to add definition and structure to your lips. If you’re not so confident about applying one, go in for a nude lip liner,” says Kanika, who goes on to add, “Keep the rest of your face minimal — just a good touch of foundation and some kohl will do. If you feel that your skin looks too pale because of the colour add a touch of blush in a natural shade. Don’t go overboard with the rest of your make-up.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
