Little Mahatmas march for harmony
Unmindful of the heat, nearly 400 children from underprivileged background gathered at Nigam Pratibha Vidyalaya at Malviya Nagar on Saturday evening to attend an awareness programme based on the theme of communal harmony.
The event organised by Delhi-based NGO Aarohan in association with National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), saw Lalit Kumar, Secretary of NFCH and newly elected councilor of the area Nutan Kochar encourage the children.
Wearing clothes of different regions to show religious diversity, the children excitedly participated and sat like a good audience in a number of events including folk dance, fusion dance, stage play followed by a peace march. The highlight of the evening was the march in which more than 40 boys walked in Mahatma Gandhi’s get-up and 10 girls dressed up as Mother Teresa while a girl in red saree took a lead as mother India.
A child said, “I am here because I am an Indian,” to which another one added, “All Indians are brothers and sisters.”
Blushing and trying to fall in line while walking, children enjoyed the applause they got from the guests. Addressing the ceremony, Lalit Kumar, who was impressed with the performance of these children, said, “Aarohan has taken a right step to enhance the inner ability of the slum children who were just wasting their time before, and we should be proud of that.”
