Living the good life

She likes her spoons on the right side of the plate and forks on the left. She appreciates a firm handshake and polite greetings but an indecorous gesture might make her squirm a little before she goes back to flashing her radiant smile again.

Grooming expert Rukshana Eisa, who has been training Miss India contestants in matters of etiquette and general lady-likeness for a few years, believes it’s part of her life now. And as much as she tries, it’s impossible to hush the compulsive grooming expert in her. “When at a restaurant, I can’t help but notice the table settings and get a little miffed if they’re not up to the mark. Then I hear myself saying I must stop doing that!” says Rukshana who first started her own grooming school Image Inc., with good friend and entrepreneur, Yash Birla.
Rukshana believes it is the gratification of the job that keeps her going. “I love people’s keenness to learn new things. I love the experience of taking people through the process of grooming. It’s very rewarding,” she says adding, “There are times when tee totaler wives walk in to learn more about serving cocktails for when they host parties. It’s nice to see people making an effort to live in style.”
One of the popular faces in Mumbai’s social circuit, Rukshana has no qualms about admitting to her fondness for dolling up. “Armani’s formal wear collection is one of my favourites. But for the evenings, I prefer it to be a little dressier,” says the lady who looks forward to her annual New York sojourn for a shopping treat. “I go to New York every year with my girl friends and when we do, it’s all about shopping and indulging in gourmet food at some of the best restaurants in downtown Manhattan. Just us girls on a holiday,” she smiles. Much like the Sex And The City foursome? “Well let’s not take it that far,” she laughs.
A travel enthusiast, Rukshana swears she’d hop on to a plane at the shortest notice if it is headed to a holiday destination. “I love exploring new places. There’s so much to see, so much to learn from everything around us. I could do it all the time. And if there’s one place I could go back to, it would have to be Europe. Places like Rome and Paris are too magical for words.”
And if she’s not travelling or teaching the ladies how to powder their nose, Rukshana indulges in the second best thing — reading. “I enjoy reading a variety of books. And I am a people’s person. I love meeting new people and spending time with loved ones,” she smiles.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
