Love triangle heats up
Be it a story of two gangsters, love in the holy land of Benaras, or a suspense thriller, B’town loves the idea of adding a twist to romance. From intense classic hits like Silsila and Saajan to recent films like Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Again, Bloody Isshq, Raanjhanaa, Nautanki Saala, Race 2 and Cocktail, the treatment of love triangles has changed but two characters falling in love with one continues to be a recurring plot in Bollywood.
The best thing about a love triangle is that it adds an ideal twist to any story that leads to lot of drama, emotions, sacrifice and teary-eyed audience, says filmmaker Kapil Sharma. His film I, Me Aur Main had John Abraham oscillating between two women, Chitrangada Singh and Prachi Desai.
“Love triangle is a great way to add conflict to a story. It keeps the audience wondering what will happen next. Therefore, Bollywood keeps discovering love triangles over and over again,” says Kapil, who adds that we live in a time of tangled and messy relationships, and the tear-jerking formula of unrequited love immediately captures audience’s attention.
Script and dialogue writer Junaid Vaid says that now love triangle has evolved into multiple triangles. “From old-time hits like Sangam where Rajendra Kumar kills himself in the end, the genre of the love triangle has evolved. Films like Golmaal and Chashme Baddoor have more than two male characters falling for one girl. Also, many love stories are now set in small towns since strong emotions like love seem to survive better in small cities only. However, the basic ingredients of these twisted love stories remain the same,” adds Junaid.
Another love triangle waiting to hit the screen is between Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha and Imran Khan in the upcoming OUATIMA. “I couldn’t say no to the script since it dealt with an interesting and emotional love story. There are two men who are all set to win the world but they both are also at the same time struggling for attention and affection of one woman. In spite of the power and money they enjoy, both are helplessly in love with one woman,” says Imran.
Recent love triangles that captured audience’s imaginations include Murder 3, Raaz 3, JTHJ, Talaash and Student Of The Year. “With love triangle as a central theme, there is a lot more scope to explore various emotions like passion, jealousy, heartbreaks, confusion and even adultery in a plot,” adds Kapil.
