Make a graceful exit on your own terms

There are people who refuse to leave the stage and there are others who not only surprise but inspire you with their decision to step out of the spotlight when they are at the peak of their career. Their farewell is an important reminder that sooner or later we need to vacate wherever we are now and it is always good to make a graceful exit.
Although supermodel Tinu Verghis’ decision to say goodbye to the runway has left her well-wishers asking for more, it has also highlighted the fact that a timely departure is always praiseworthy.
Tinu recalls how around two years back Abhay Deol had asked her if she was still modelling. Abhay probably saw her modelling images when he was in school. “I was not ready then because I was setting up an event to promote sustainable fashion and I was running behind the bamboo ministry to get them to support me. I loved the impossibility of it. People can perceive what they want, but you need to figure out for yourself what is good for you. Fear keeps you from taking the plunge. One life, why fear?” asks Tinu.
Tinu, who is all set to join Lasalle College of Arts, Singapore, doesn’t shy away from confessing that she has done all that she could possibly do in this field and has now reached a stage in where there is no more room for her to grow, so stepping out now makes sense instead of dragging on till she loses her focus.
“When you feel you have done all that is possible for you to do, you need to move out for the next person to come in. Life is a constant change. I want to grow as a person. There is so much to learn and life is too short. I don’t want to waste my life holding on to an idea of who I am. I want to experience life and change with it. I hope I will still be excited to learn something new when I am 70 years old,” elucidates Tinu.
Her contemporary Pia Trivedi too feels that when you’ve worked hard and achieved recognition for your work, you’d want people to remember you for the great things you did.
Says Pia, “It’s important to know when to bid adieu so you can be
remembered for your work and not just as someone who hung around till they were ignored and not wanted. Leave people with great memories of you and pass on the crown to the next in line so that they can work hard to justify taking your position. When your time is up, it’s best to leave. Otherwise you are left with questions and sadness.”
Everybody has to retire but in the glam world, it’s always significant to have a great ending. “It’s better if you decide about your departure than people suggesting you to go away. When it’s time to leave, embrace it gracefully and allow the new life to begin and allow yourself to grow,” says model Sucheta Sharma.
Bubbles Sabharwal, who has been an intrinsic part of the glam industry, has figured out the problem with people on the top — they believe “People on the top want to be in control, can’t let go. They need to know that No.1 is only a position. Dignity is as valuable as fame and money. So it is best to gracefully bow out, so the world always remembers you as Numero Uno,” concludes Bubbles.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
