Mature romance

You may be married and settled, but that spark can still be kept alive, as couples share what makes them tick and how

Riddhima and Bharat Sahani

Marriage for us is more of a give and take of love. And love to us is mutual trust, care and understanding. After being married for around five years, the trust between us has only multiplied and so has love.
So, for us, each moment is a perfect moment. It might sound cliched, but it’s true. Having said that, there are many more moments of love I can talk about. Like the quality time we spend together when we are out on a holiday. I remember as a teenager, I used to be excited about Valentine Day, but we have matured over the year. Now, I don’t believe that there should just be one day of love. Each day is a day of love. So, it’s just another day for us and it does hold significance.

I think the most beautiful thing about marriage is that you can selflessly do things for your loved one without feeling that you have compromised or in anyway adjusted. Marriage can be a big problem if you constantly feel burdened, but the most beautiful part is that with Ankur I never feel like it is a chore, our journey together has been pleasurable. Ankur and I have been married for 10 years and we have two lovely kids together and the even though we work as a team, we have learnt to complement each other and there are no ego barriers. Love, I feel is all about companionship and understanding and less about buying expensive gifts on special occasions.

I was a wild party animal in my 20s and Raseel has sobered me down. Marriage has taught me how to care about others too. The best part about my marriage is that Raseel and I are not together because of a social obligation, but we mutually respect each other more than anything else. We love to spend time together. I was a rebel and just like any other boy at that age loved my independence, but marriage taught me how to be calm and composed. I realised that it’s important to have a family and there are many adjustments (in a very positive sense) that you need to make in life as there are people who love you, and they also need your time and care. Marriage taught me how to be less selfish.

Marriage helps you live in reality, as when you’re dating someone or having an affair, you live in a fantasy world. I feel marriage has taught me to be real. It taught me to respect a relationship, which is going to be a long lasting journey. It made me more responsible towards sharing a stronger bond with wife Romsha. Marriage is also about living life in a very organised way. I love sitting along the seaside with my wife, planning our future and sharing thoughts.

We’ll be completing 17 years of our married life this year and I’ve learnt that marriage is all about companionship. I’ve learnt a lot from Navin and since he’s an achiever in every way, I’ve evolved as a person in marriage. I’ve realised that it’s important for you to grow as an individual in marriage to keep a balance. So I’ve grown over the years with him and we’ve always worked on our marriage. Marriage has taught me some of life’s most beautiful lessons. Although we’ve never really celebrated Valentine’s Day, Navin convinces me by saying everyday is Valentine’s.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
