Mid-term merriment

Dusshera heralds a welcome break from studies. With the holiday season around the corner, here are some ideas geared to fill your days with fun…
Quick getaways: Take a family trip to Agra and stop off at Vrindavan, Mathura. Or head to Dehradun/Mussoorie halting at Rishikesh, Chakrata and the other adventure spots at Uttarakhand. And if the hills still interest you why not try chilling out in Shoghi, Naldehra, Jubbal in Himachal?
Take a wild break: Any nearby wildlife sanctuary (Rantham-bore, Sariska) is the perfect place to spend a quick break, close to nature. Take your sketch pad along or your diary to keep memories alive!
Online fun: If getaways are not an option, there is always the trusty computer. Play games online checking out portals such as bored.com, funbrain. com, moshimonsters.com, habbo.com, etc. Shooting and strategy games are particularly popular genres and of course there are lots of educational games that can help you with numericals and foreign languages. A few well-known fun sites are Moshi Monsters, Habbo Hotel and StarDoll. And last but not least check out Nintendo’s Pokémon games.
Board games: Devised to put you in the fun mode are games like Monopoly, Scrabble, Taboo, Cluedo, Risk, etc. Get your friends together for a game or play with the family.
Enrol in a short course: If music and dance is what you are interested in, there are a plethora of courses offered across India. Shiamak Davar and Ashley Lobo’s dance schools teach you everything from the salsa to the waltz!
Day trips: Get a few like-minded pals and head off to the zoo. Catch the animals as they call to each other or take an afternoon snooze! Or perambulate in the botanical gardens. Catch nature at its best and just have a lazy, fun-filled day.
Get creative: Help your mom create festive decorations like Rangoli or Alpana or Kolam. This colourful art form, usually made at the entrance to a house to welcome deities and guests around festive occasions, could keep you creatively occupied.
Take to reading: Catch up on your reading. A book, you will find, is a wonderful companion.
Have fun!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
