Mind the curves

It’s always nice to see actresses like Vidya Balan, Parineeti Chopra, and Sonakshi Sinha embracing their curves and not succumbing to the size zero fad. However, Kareena Kapoor believes that being big is uncool.

She has been on a strict diet for over a month to look lean and sexy for a song she’s shooting for her upcoming film Heroine. Bebo frankly admits, “I have gone back to the size-zero look I had in Tashan, but this time it is curvier. It may be a trend now with some actors, but I definitely don’t want to look plump or fat!”
A curvy and voluptuous body is the traditional Indian concept of beauty. Male celebs from the glam industry share what according to them is sexy — slim or curvy.
Fashion photographer Atul Kasbekar finds a fit and athletic body attractive. “I find size zero shapeless. A fit and tight body with athletic attributes looks better in women.”
But for designer and filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, being curvy and chubby is not a right look for an actress. “As a filmmaker, I feel that for an actress to tell the story of a film, both the body and the face is important. Body language is as important as the face language. I think it’s an elegant persona that is important for an actress to be able portray the right emotions. Vidya Balan conformed to the demand of her characters in Kahaani and The Dirty Picture, where her curvy and fat look worked. But she can’t afford to be fat if she has to design her future in the film industry. Being curvy is not right. If Rekha had been fat, she couldn’t have played Umrao Jaan. Slim will always be in for an actress. Being big is for sculptures. Nobody would like an actress with thunder thighs and big hips. This works sometimes to portray comic roles. If an Indian actress has to wear a sari, nobody wants a huge belly popping out,” he says.
For some being curvy or slim is not important, but what is vital is how comfortable a woman is in her skin. Director Abhishek Kapoor of Kai Po Che! says, “In my teenage, ofcourse I loved slim women, but now it’s all about how happy she is in her skin. I have dated all kinds of women, now I see beyond slim and sexy. Women should be happy about their looks and should pull it off well. If a girl is happy about being fat or size zero, I would love her the way she is.”
Agrees choreographer Sondip Soparkar, who says, “I think being cool about curvy or slim depends on one’s attitude. If a woman can carry curvy look in a stylish manner, that’s what matters. Personally, all Indian men like women with sexy bustline.”
But glam girls still prefer curvy bodies. Actress Preity Zinta is all praise for fellow actress Vidya Balan’s curves. She believes size issues are a personal choice, and says she supports Vidya for flaunting her curves proudly and setting a new trend.
Seconds model Joey Mathew, who feels that Indian body is nothing without sexy curves. “Curvaceous is sexy, size zero looks like a lamp post to me. One should have some fat around the body. It defines Indian beauty and goes well with Indian attires. Imagine a girl flaunting a salwaar kameez with shapeless hip line, it looks like a hanger,” she sums up.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
