This summer, let simplicity carve a stylish niche and translate the beauty of minimalist fashion into a trendy tale. Calvin Klein, Nicole Farhi, Margaret Howell and Hermes have opted for this idea this season, and are patronising the “play it down” look.

Resist the razzmatazz and cut an alluring picture in simple lines and clean cut silhouettes, soft colours and barely-there accessories. Going the subtle way happens to be the big trend of the season. “Say no to flair and frill, and of course embellishments do not find much place in the minimal scheme of things. I feel this style is done best with a sober colour palette. Navy blue, grey, white, teal and ice blue best respond to the minimal look,” recommends designer Nil of Dev r Nil label.
The designer makes a clear distinction between bland and simple. “Going the minimalist way does not indicate turning into a plain Jane, it just reminds you that simplicity can chart its very own fashionable course. And a good one too! Just stick to the ‘keep it under control rule’ and carry yourself with a lot of confidence,” adds Nil.
While the minimal wave has hit the global fashion scene, designer Sunaina Suneja feels Indians too need to respond to this idea with more enthusiasm. She says, “Unfortunately, we find a growing number of people in India moving away from minimalism and demanding embellished garments, which I feel is a tectonic shift in Indian aesthetics. Just delve into the history of our textiles, embellishments and costumes and this transformation is evident.”
Providing an insight into the minimalistic flavour, the Delhi-based designer says, “In my view, it is ideal for the searing summer months. Cool colours, pleasing pastels and pristine whites in natural fibres such as khadi and cotton not only keep the wearer of these garments comfortable but also maintains the cool.”
Talking about creating the minimal look, Sunaina says, “For me, the minimal effect could be a neutral colour, be it white, beige or a very light version of a mustard paired with a beautiful brightly coloured Kota doria dupatta in orange or magenta. Or it could be a subtle gold with white chikan work. And wide flowing palazzo in khadi to complete the outfit.”
Shades of blue, preferably indigo, work brilliantly too and are the flavour of the season. “Blue is reminiscent of cool waters and azure early morning skies yet untouched by the harshness of the sun. The lightest tone of blue for your top, worn with a darker shade for your pants or palazzo, completed with an ‘in between the two’ blue for a scarf or dupatta will win you the spotlight,” adds Sunaina.
Designer Sakshee Pradhan relies on the word “simple” while describing minimalist fashion. “Play it up in a stylish manner with more structured looks. Tone your attire down yet make it look classy and stylish. It is the look that will soon fade out the gaudiness and excessive bling and sequins we’ve been drawn to. For instance, a floral or any kind of printed garment like skirts or gowns should settle for a diamond stud as an accessory to bring out the right effect. Team an A-line skirt with a crisp white shirt and neon or bright coloured accessories or necklace. For a simple stylish look make sure the footwear is eye-catching with a pop of colour and the bag is structured like the Lady Dior bag,” says Sakshee.
