Mistress of melodies takes centre stage
Presenting a soulful evening of Indian and western music on the piano, 28-year-old daughter of Delhi Police Commissioner, Ankita Kumar recently performed amidst stalwarts like Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and her guru and mentor Brian Silas among others.
The performance held at IIT Delhi featured Bollywood retro classics, western classical and popular numbers and devotional tunes. “I do not like adhering to one strict format of a show. I keep my performances free- flowing. At the recent concert, I performed a mix of music as diverse as old melodies like Babuji Dheere Chalna to the latest songs like Itni Si Khushi (Barfi) to Boney M’s songs and timeless English classic tunes,” informs Ankita.
Talking about her romance with instrument, Ankita shares, “I started at the age of 12, under the tutelage of master pianist Brian Silas, who is like my uncle. I want to reach out to as many people as possible through my music and expose them to the versatility of the piano.”
Apart from mastering her hands on piano, Ankita is a filmmaker by profession and has worked as an assistant director with Prakash Jha and is currently working on individual film projects. “I have given more than 20 live performances and I also run a piano academy ‘Colors of Music’ that has students in the age group of 6 to 60 years,” shares Ankita, who also has a music album titled Resonance to her credit.
