Mix ‘n’ Match to flaunt your style

When engineering student Shikha recently bought a cute chic top, she decided to team it up with long jhumkis to give it a colourful twist. While for many, the combination may not be “cool”, Shikha insists on experimenting with different trends to “bring out her own style statement.”
From churidars with boyfriend shirts, to salwars with T-shirts, colourful eye make-up and stylish bags, seems like “experiment” is the buzzword among young divas. Mix-matching everything from clothes, to hairstyles, and accessories too, with a dash of style, and experiment, you can now sport any look you want.
For someone, who loves playing up with accessories, Shikha says, “I often end up picking up weird combinations. Most often I prefer wearing big colourful jhumkis with my Tees. I don’t like following the so-called rules of fashion.”
Since being “accepted” is no longer an issue, final year student Monica Nathani, recently bought a printed salwar to team it up with a plain Tee instead of a kurti, caring little about what her friends would say. “Everyone wears salwars with kurtis, but I was tired of the same combo. So a few days back, I thought since harems look really boring now, I must replace them with something on similar lines. That’s when I wore my Tee to college with salwar, and it looked cool.”
If you thought it’s only sexy heels or flip flops that compliment that short dress in your closet, it may not be so. Model Purvi rarely wears sandals with dresses. “Even when I wear shorts, I prefer them with chappals and not shoes. Recently, I wore my sports shoes with a dress. Who says you can’t experiment? It’s not just “mix and match”, but mismatch is the word here. You can go for extremely different styles together and look fabulous,” she says.
For many, mix-match helps them explore their creativity better. Says designer Nida Mahmood, “I find it interesting to mix elements which don’t really belong together in principle. It gives me more room for innovation and experiment. I also feel this way I can use the garments and accessories differently more number of times while enjoying the process of styling my outfits.”
Mismatch, however, doesn’t mean you experiment without any fashion sense. “When I mix and match my clothes, or accessories, I know what I’m doing. I always have some idea about my personality in that specific attire,” says Aakanksha Goel, a student.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
