Monica dons many hats
After Dhobi Ghat, American singer and actress of Indian origin Monica Dogra is looking forward to the release of her new film David. David is a story in three parts, about three different men, during three different time periods and in three different places.
Monica, who recently performed at Cocaine Bar and Lounge while talking about her role in the movie shares, “I play the role an explosive woman, who stands up for what she believes in even at the darkest of hours. She is a Muslim girl in London, who loves with a burning passion.”
Sharing her experience of working with Bejoy Nambiar, Monica elaborates, “What I really like about Bejoy is that he approaches the film from every angle. He pays attention to everything from music to the actors. Everyone has a strong identity on and off screen that takes the movie to the next level.”
On sharing the silver screen with Neil Nitin Mukesh, Monica says, “He’s a fabulous actor, and I feel he has become a friend. We had a bit of a rough start as we were both thrown into the throngs of a very difficult script on an extremely tight timeline, and more than that we’re from very different worlds. But when we dug a bit deeper, and we found we had a lot in common.”
Sabal Sheikhawat’s Fireflies is another film that is keeping Monica busy these days. She says, “It’s a layered and important conversation on love and the intricacies that lie therein. My co-star and dear friend Arjun Mathur plays opposite me.”
She adds, “Fireflies was one of those experiences where everyone involved in the making of that film became one, inseparable, and dedicated to the cause of telling this story... we were so close, that after pack-up was called, we’d all be sitting together in one room in the hotel until right before we had to go to bed. I really feel that that energy will seep into the movie, and pray that audiences feel how much bone marrow of the spirit and heart was pumped into the making of that film.”
As a singer, Monica was seen in TV music show The Dewarists and feels that music has grown a lot in India. She says, “I released my third album with Shaa’ir + Func, travelled with The Dewarists, toured around the world and have also been working on my fourth album.”
Talking about her twin passions — singing and acting, Monica says, “Juggling all these things isn’t a conscious decision, I’m just being myself and when good work comes my way, I take it. I don’t feel I’ve ever compromised on my identity in any of the projects I’ve taken on. Even with David, while it is a huge departure from what I’ve been known to do, I’m sure my fans will see my performance and fully understand why it is I chose to take on this role and this film.”
