In the mood for white magic
Moving from a bigger house to a smaller apartment may have its shortcomings but then there are benefits too, especially if you are a young mother managing the house, looking after kids amid other chores.
Designer Monisha Bajaj left behind the comfort of a big house in Gurgaon with a courtyard full of plants, and moved to an apartment recently with her husband and two kids. She says she wanted to instill the apartment culture in her kids and also wanted to make her life a little easier. “An apartment is so easy to manage. It took much more time and effort to manage and maintain the house we were in earlier,” says Monisha, who has a special fondness for light hues. Her house boasts of furniture upholstered in white. “That’s me. And since I have always loved an all-white look, I wasn’t able to maintain it in a bigger house,” she says.
In the living area, the furniture clubbed with magenta and cyan cushions, a beige rug alongside a wooden bar arrangement at one corner, gives a very contemporary, chic look. The pristine walls speak of immaculate maintenance. And the beautiful green plants in the balcony talk about Monisha’s knack for gardening.
Monisha could have given up on the large space, but she can’t imagine living without open spaces and an unhindered view of the sky. She chose an apartment on the ninth floor so that she could have an uninterrupted view of the sky from her balcony amid the plants.
Her design sensibilities are more obvious in her two kids’ rooms. Her 12-year-old daughter’s room is all pink with a feminine touch while her seven-year-old son’s room has a boyish charm with toys of super cars and the likes. “We couldn’t have thought of making a joint kids’ room because their tastes vary,” says Monisha.
And while all the walls are bare, one that leads to her bedroom has been personalised with two big frames — one has a collage of pictures of Monisha and her husband Anil Lepps while the other has her two kids in different moods and times.
