Moods of wood
“My house is an extension of the personalities of my family members. I created a unique theme that encompassed everybody’s likes and desires.
I chose the colours according to the personalities of the occupants, keeping their likes, dislikes, interests, age etc. in mind,” says Bubble Batra, owner of One & Only furniture store, who resides in New Friends Colony.
The house opens up to a huge living room, attached to a lobby. It leads to a dining space and kitchen, all decorated with elaborate wooden furniture with carvings of angels, flowers etc. “Essence of wood plays a vital role in house decor. I feel very close to wood because for me it is a living aspect of life. I feel stories come alive when tales are told by wood. The journey of that log of wood from a mountaintop to my drawing room has a very humbling effect on me. To me, making furniture is turning wood into pieces of art which can be treasured as heirlooms.”
She also loves antique pieces and artworks, “Each and every piece I own has some story behind it. The tall flower vase in the living room is my favourite, which I spotted at an exhibition. It fascinated me as it had light inside it. The glass pieces are joined together to add grandeur to the vase. Then there is a fascinating Chinese bell, which I find very mesmerising. I found the inscription on the bells fascinating. I like to use paintings to enhance the aura of the house,” she says.
A beautiful elevator leads to the second floor which has her bedroom along with a farm-cum-ship style lounge and dining area. “The adventures of the seas, stories of treasure hunts, cowboys riding through the mountains always fascinated me. As my parents gave me full liberty to experiment, I let my creative juices flow and created an exciting English ranch style lounge area using assorted elements like saddles, guns, faces of animals like the elephant and giraffe, half wheel cart, tables,” she shares.
While her bedroom is in pink and gold, Bubble’s parents’ room has a green theme. She believes the colour theme of a room should match the personality of a person living in the room. “The colour green is rejuvenating, refreshing, harbinger of renewed energies, new life, and happy times ahead. I mixed a bit of gold in it to make my parents feel regal and majestic. Pink represents my style statement.”
The guest room on the top floor is designed on straight, simplistic lines with an L-shaped sofa, double bed, pantry and terrace garden, creating a comfort zone for visitors. She designed her brother’s room that opens onto a veranda leading to a terrace garden that has wooden fountain.
“Love for nature has been inherent in me ever since I remember,” she sums up.
