Mothers guide daughters to stitch-dom
It has been assumed by philosophers and social experts that matriarchy maybe one of the most idealist ways of functioning because in such a system daughters inherit from their mothers by default. Although we may not be living in such a society, but many daughters are bequeathing the legacy of their new-age designer moms who are proud to pass on the trade secrets to their daughters.
With mother-daughter duos like Reynu-Nikita Taandon, Anjana-Ankita Bhargav and Neeta-Nishka Lulla in action, fashion labels go strong with the advantage of old-world charm and new-age spark.
At the Lakme Fashion Week designer Neeta Lulla’s daughter Nishka’s collection “Nisshk” received a lot of attention. Designer Anjana Bhargav’s daughter came up with her label “ANKY” and got rave reviews. And, designer Reynu Taandon’s daughter Nikita joined her mom’s label Mynah to start a new sub-label and cater to the younger generation of fashionistas.
Designer Neeta Lulla discloses that just after passing her Class 10 exams her daughter Nishka decided she wanted to be a fashion designer. She says, “I asked her to read newspapers and magazines and get updated with the latest trends. After college, she interned under me and worked as an assistant designer on a couple of film projects. She was clear about what she wanted to do and hoped to start a label for young girls. I just told her to stay focused and work hard.”
Whereas in Nikita Taandon’s case her mother saw her passion for fashion at a very nascent stage and encouraged her. Reynu informs, “My daughter was interested in designing since childhood, and since my husband and I both were in the fashion business I guess it was in her genes to be a designer. She later studied fashion retailing and marketing from San Francisco and came back with fresh ideas for my label. Today, I take care of the bridal and resort wear segment and she handles the entire western wear line. I think it is best to work in a team so that there is a mix of old and new ideas, and when it’s a mother-daughter duo things go really well.”
