Munni, Sheila become inspiration for SMSes
Most people who are obsessed with Bollywood would agree that it you can never get enough of masala filmy songs and dialogues in India. With snazzy numbers like Munni and Sheila ki Jawani topping the charts, many youngsters have found an interesting way to keep the buzz going though funny SMS jokes on these filmy bombshells. Thanks to mass texting services and some “creative” heads these item song characters have a formed an entire category of SMSes that are doing the rounds in the city.
Ayushi Verma, a 25-year-old boutique owner finds these filmy SMSes quite hilarious. She says, “I keep getting so many jokes in the form of SMS forwards about either Munni or Sheila everyday. These are often targeted at these women and their on screen antics. Some of them are also promotional SMSes using these ‘famous’ babes from the Hindi film industry. The most hilarious one I came across was a comparative SMS between Munni and Sheila on the basis of their dancing skills.”
Sometime back when the movie Robot and Dabangg were released, SMS jokes on Chulbul Pandey (Salman’s character) and Rajnikant were circulated all over. Sumit Dhameeja, a DU student opines, “SMSes on popular filmy characters are the most circulated jokes after Santa-Banta. Since almost everybody is a movie buff they like to read the jokes and exchange the dialogues as SMSes. It’s also a great marketing strategy since these texts are indirectly publicising the movie as well.”
For some these songs may seem a bit raunchy, but surprising they are also among the most downloaded favourite caller tunes and ringtones. Saurabh Sinha, who is studying MBA from IIPM, thinks these songs and SMSes top the popularity chart because they are catchy. He says, “My friends love to download latest Bollywood numbers, and since it’s like a group thing so if one has it everyone else follows.”
