Music hits a new high

Come July 7 and music lovers will be in for a treat as MTV’s second edition of Coke Studio will hit the air waves at 7 pm.
This year’s show will see some of the country’s promising young musicians exploring rhythms way beyond the realm of those hackneyed Bollywood beats.

The target audience is the youth who will probably enjoy the new tempo — at least that’s the impression one got from the preview that took place at the city’s Shangri-La Eros Hotel recently.
The show is all set to celebrate the spirit of Indian music by bringing together artistes from different genres to create fusion. So, when names like Amit Trivedi, Ehsaan-Loy, Karsh Kale, Hitesh Sonik, Clinton Cerejo and Shantanu Moitra agreed to share a platform, magic seemed just waiting to happen.
Musician Clinton, who is an ace at fusing Western sensibilities into rustic Indian music has stretched his creative limits with this show. “All you need is pure talent and an eagerness to create something fresh,” he said. He narrated how he managed to bring in an unknown musician from a far-flung village in Rajasthan after he saw his YouTube clip. “The person deserved to be on the show for the talent he has and we took the effort to bring him on board,” he added.
Each musician has done five songs for the show, teaming up with voices from different parts of the country. National award-winning composer, Amit, who is known for introducing unknown rustic voices has been recognised for bringing new sound and revolution into film music. “I am simply going to have fun on the show. There are no restrictions or demands. So, we are free to create any kind of music,” said Amit whose “find” is a 16-year-old boy from Punjab, he met two years ago.
For musicians Ehsan and Loy, the show is a melting pot of different influences with interesting stories being told through songs. “There will be a story behind each song and every person who is seen on the show. In this way, the show promises to be a new phenomenon,” said Ehsan.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
