Musical journey picks up steam

She has the zeal, the youthful energy, the right attitude, great voice quality and some of the best music directors recording with her. Singer Shalmali Kholgade, who has several prestigious awards in her kitty, debuted with the blockbuster Pareshaan, followed by a string of chartbusters like Daru Desi, Aga Bai, Lat Lag Gayee and Rumani.

The singer, who recently performed in the capital at Lemp Brewpub and Kitchen, Gurgaon gets introspective about her journey so far and about her love for the capital. Talking about her upcoming projects, Shalmali says, “I am eagerly awaiting for the release of the film Peddlers, produced by Anurag Kashyap. I have sung three songs in this film, which are written and composed by music director Karan Kulkarni. I have also recorded two Bengali songs with music composer Indradip Dasgupta.”
“It’s the song and the music that matters most to me. Who the song is going to be picturised on is secondary. Times are changing and not all songs are lip-synchronised by the actors and as recording artists we need not sound like the actors as much any more. What is most important though, is to emote rightly to bring out the desired effect in the video.”
So is she choosy about the songs she picks? “I do feel awkward singing lyrics that are vulgar. Songs with vulgar words also don’t reflect well on the times we are living in,” says the 25-year old singer.
About her love for the capital, Shalmali says, “Every time I drive on Delhi roads, I love gazing at all the wonderful monuments that stand proudly in the middle of the bustling city.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
