Mystical facets of a woman’s world
Woman is epitome of beauty, strength and resilience. More often than not, she has had to face existential conundrums. However, without her presence, life would cease to exist on planet earth. A city-based non-profit organisation, Empowerment has taken the onus to display the various facets of women through art. “Feminine Mystique” is a celebration of the quintessential woman, and what better timing than to celebrate it with the women, as International Woman’s Day is around the corner.
“I have two of my paintings, Spring and Mother displayed at the exhibition. While the former is all about the power of woman to bring life on planet, just like spring is all about bloom, the latter shows a mother with a child on her lap along with kites in the background, showing the progressive mood of the mother to reach certain heights,” says artist Shweta Zharotia, who has been working on paintings that present the power of feminism for more than two decades and her work is a mix of real and abstract.
These paintings portray the essence of a woman in myriad avatars, in her entirety, her soul, her sensuality and grace. Young artist Bharti Verma loves to create a dream world. A recent post-graduate from the College of Arts, three of her paintings are on display at the exhibition. “I have always felt that my mother has always been a strong influence in my life and I have tried to portray her in one of my paintings of a woman in a red saree. Then there is painting of a woman sitting in front of a mirror, trying to think about her dream and there is a point where her dream world merges with real world. As women we have certain ambitions, dreams and hopes, which I have tried to portray in my artworks,” says Bharti.
The journey for the artist is a journey to the core of herself and a cathartic experience as well. A feeling, an expression that goes beyond the words but overflows into each canvas in a unique signature style is the mark of this exhibition.
“In an Indian society, which has a sensitive but powerful history of gender inequality, women voice their thoughts in various ways. My paintings use the oil on canvas medium to project womanhood — the strength, struggle and beauty,” says artist Sonika Agarwal.
“It is a month long exhibition, that is meant to reflect the power of women in society and aims to create a social impact, through the medium of art. All the artworks are by woman and highlight various traits of feminism,” adds curator, Kumar Vikas Saxena.
Feminine Mystique is on till March 20 at DLF Place Saket, District Centre
