Netizens hit the keys in demand for justice
Twitter and Facebook were flooded with comments like “too little too late” and “as tragic as tragedy itself” in support of the Bhopal gas tragedy victims. After the verdict in the 26-year-old case, when a gas leak in Bhopal’s Union Carbide plant had killed over 20,000 and left an unspecified number critically wounded, many hit the keys to register their disappointment. Youngsters followed the case and posted their views on the verdict on social networking sites and blogosphere.
Many think the accused were let off easily by the court. Aastha Jindal, corporate communicator, says, “This is sheer injustice to the horrific Bhopal gas tragedy victims. It is another let down for the existing law and order in India. Considering the speed at which such mistakes are being made, we’ll soon have a huge record of such let downs.”
Gunjan Piplani, journalism graduate, seconds, “Going by the long meandering proceedings I would have been surprised had there been a strict punishment.”
Some like Abhay Anand, IIMC passout, are disillusioned at how the alleged prime accused, US national Warren Anderson, still hasn’t been brought to task due to diplomatic hassles. Abhay avers, “Safety and security of citizens must be the foremost priority, and not profit-making. The law needs to be made stricter to nab culprits like Warren Anderson and what was most shocking was the fact that 304A that deals with causing death due to negligence was imposed on the culprits.”
Many still hope that the judiciary will finally bring the culprits to task. Shantanu Kejriwal, law student, chips in, saying, “Despite all this, those invicted plan to move to higher courts and we know how that could further lengthen the process. But those who have waited for 26 long years will hope that the culprits are strictly punished in the High Court and Supreme Court.”
Although the cynicism against the disaster that still causes deformity in children is clearly visible on Web forums, those with social groups hope the case shall be further pursued for a positive verdict. Kshipra Thakur, a part of Justice For Bhopal Tragedy Victims community on Facebook.com, sums up, saying, “As far as numbers are concerned, it afflicted more than the combined toll in Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic explosions and the toxicity still causes deformity in children there. I hope the investigative agencies can extradite Anderson and bring him to task.”
