New-age men ready to assist busy wives

House proud men love picking up knick-knacks for their home, some don’t mind fixing things, but when it comes to chores such as cleaning or washing, they let women take charge. A new study by a domestic appliance company says that 82 per cent of women carry out the cleaning at home, while only eight per cent of husbands and boyfriends are in charge of domestic chores. Many males are happy to pass the buck when it comes to housekeeping.
Siddhartha Sen, a professional explains, “Men are never very methodical when it comes to cleaning homes. I hate cleaning my home, but I like buying stuff like; lampshades, stylish bedsheets, cushion covers. However, I detest cleaning, washing clothes and utensils. I do love cooking and don’t think it’s restricted to women alone, but sadly it may not be true for all men.”
Men like a challenge at what they do and perhaps domestic chores don’t fit the bill. Advertising professional Avinash Nair says, “I’ve always felt that cleaning is the most difficult and boring among all tasks. I think most men try not to get into domestic chores. I love buying things for my house that even surprises my mom, but I must confess that I wouldn’t like to be seen mopping or brooming. I let my maid do all that.”
Entrepreneur Mona Ittina disagrees with Avinash and says that while it is true that a lot of men do conclude that household chores, no matter how automated they are, are a woman’s responsibility, there are a lot of neo-age men who do understand the pressures of their working spouses. Helping out in chores and sharing household responsibilities seem to be the new mantra.
Mona who’s getting married next month assures her husband would be willing to help whenever it’s required. His contribution will only make the bond between us stronger, she stresses. “But as a typical wife I would want to do things the traditional way,” she adds.
A man may not be as fussy as a woman who may want her home to be spotless, while women are aware that men will not be able to understand their obsession with domestic chores.
Arshi Uppal, professional, laughs it off saying, “Of course, men don’t give a damn about house work, why would my husband share chores even though we have a help at home.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
