Nitha Nava dons many hats
Sri Lanka-born Nitha Nava defies categories. She has been a beauty queen, supermodel, actress and now debutant director. She also has a degree in criminology.
Fashion and law
I became a TV host at 16, then acted in commercials and music videos, got lead roles in Canadian-Tamil flicks and also walked for global fashion shows. I’d never expected to be in the glamour industry as my interest had always been law.
The movie biz
It’s a major challenge for a woman to remain long enough in the media field. I wanted to prove people wrong. So now I have directed my first film, Uyiril Kalanthuviddai, with an awesome team. It’s not over yet as I had to take time off to travel to London to play the female lead in Aaranyam, a European-Tamil film, directed by Prem Kathir.
Miss South Asia Canada ‘11:
Having won the title, it’s important not to forget one’s roots. Now I try to spend time helping the youth achieve their goals. I have my own modelling school where the focus is to build students’ confidence.
Dreams of K’wood
My dream is to do a lead role in a Kollywood film, it would make my community proud if I were to be one of the first Tamil Sri Lankan ‘international’ girls to act in a Kollywood film.
