No one knows the truth but me: Monica

Controversies have always been a part of actress Monica Bedi’s life. Despite a “not-so-successful” career in Bollywood, Monica has had led a pretty eventful life. After taking a long break from films, she will be soon seen in a Punjabi film titled Sirphire where she’s paired opposite Priyanshu Chatterji.

The film, which is a comedy-entertaining love story also has four songs picturised on her. Refusing to reveal details about the script of the film, the Bollywood starlet shares, “I play a simple Punjabi girl who is from a small town and the story takes a turn when she joins a popular college and two young brats start following and teasing her. I can’t reveal the suspense, but I loved playing my part. In fact when the role was offered, I could relate to the character completely. I’m a simple, God fearing person and so is Simran (her character) in the film.”
The film will also have Monica performing an item number. Talking about her first experience as an item girl, she says, “It was fun. I was a bit apprehensive initially, as I didn’t want to do anything raunchy, but the song has turned out well. The best thing about the song is that it’s shot stylishly yet it’s not vulgar. I was always open to doing item numbers but I prefer them to be sexy and not cheap.”
A dozen stories have been floating about her alleged romance with gangster Abu Salem, when asked if it bothers her? Monica replies, “Not anymore. I’m tired of all the gossip that goes around. Most people don’t even come and ask me about the real picture and now I don’t want to give them any explanations.”
Having said that Monica reveals that she is writing her autobiography, which she hopes will clear many misconceptions about her past. “I am currently writing all that I’ve been through. I am penning it so that someday I can use that script to tell the truth about my life. I often feel like clearing all the mistaken beliefs that people have about my life. No one knows the truth but me,” she says.
Talking about a biopic, there has been buzz about a film called Tamanchey which is being made on the life of Abu Salem and his alleged love affair with Monica. Clueless about such a script, she quips, “Every few days I am told that some or the other script is written on my life. I have stopped reacting. But I would just want to say that even if someone wants to make a film on my relationship with him (Abu Salem) the person should at least contact me. How can anyone make a film on my life without getting the facts directly from me?”
For someone who has done regional cinema in the past, she says Bollywood will happen only if she gets the right scripts. “I don’t want a big banner film or too many projects in a year. I just want to do quality roles. Quantity doesn’t matter for me. I’m finalising a Bollywood script at the moment but not much can be revealed at this point of time,” she concludes adding that she’s only looking forward to playing strong characters and roles that promise to evolve her as an actress. Way to go Monica!

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
