“There are not many things that you can plan. A lot depends on the opportunities that come your way,” says Hussain Kuwajerwala, who is soon going to make his Bollywood debut with upcoming movie Shree. The actor, famous for his TV roles, says life is moving upswing for him and he is living every moment with no regrets.
“I never planned anything. Even acting happened by chance. I had to repeat a year in college as I failed to appear in my prelim exams. After that I got a whole year to myself and had nothing to do. I tried many things to keep myself busy during that time and acting was one of them. I got my TV break then and there has been no stopping after that,” he shares.
Hussain is well-known for essaying the role of Sumit Wadhwa in the soap Kumkum and the character of Chirag Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi made him famous in every household. These roles were the turning point in his career and he did not have to work too hard to get other breaks. Says Hussain, “I first did a serial called Aashirwad for Zee TV, then came these two shows. I feel I had been lucky that I never had to struggle for work and the audience liked my work, which gave me more work opportunities.”
Hussain has dabbled in many mediums including modelling, TV serials, anchoring, Broadway and now films. “Everything that starts comes to an end. When Kumkum ended, many more opportunities including anchoring for Indian Idol came my way. Nach Baliye made Tina and me famous as a couple. Broadway with Zangoora for Kingdom of Dreams followed and I am still busy with it. And now Shree. It is a cycle as one thing leads to the other. I never rejected anything saying this is something I can’t do. Now I am lucky enough to leave a mark in everything I did,” says Hussain.
And somewhere, Bollywood was always a dream. “Movies were always there at the back of my head. Every actor wants to be seen in films. It is an experience that you would want to be a part of and till the time you see yourself on screen, you can’t judge how good or bad you are. I too waited for the right opportunity to come my way without bothering about when it comes,” says the actor who has completed 12 years in the business of showbiz.
The script for Shree is what made Hussain enter Bollywood. “Many people ask me — why so late? I always tell them that nothing is ever too late in life. I am entering Bollywood at the right time and the moment I heard the script from director Rajesh Bachchani, I was sold,” says Hussain.
For now, he is content with his life. “Life has been beautiful. Everyone dreams of a life when you get work and get appreciated. People die for love, and here you find yourself the chosen one. Besides this I have one of the most supportive partners in Tina. I never thought that one day I’ll be doing all this,” he ends.
