Offbeat tracks
What sets Sneha Khanwalkar apart from other composers is her relentless quest for carving a niche. .
The music composer who came to Mumbai from Indore to get admission into an Engineering college, knew that she wanted to be a part of Bollywood. And it was a chance meeting with Anurag Kashyap that got her the ticket to fame. “The day I was offered Gangs of Wasseypur I knew that it was a different film. I travelled to the interiors to understand the essence of soulful music with a rural backdrop.”
Sneha’s journey to stardom is different in many ways. To begin with, she is one of the few female music composers in the industry. “I wonder why women don’t take up this profession. I think the concept of music composition is still unclear in the minds of the youth. It was neither money nor fame that got me here. I come from a family of musicians and that was always an integral part of my formative years,” she says adding, “More than what I wanted to do, I knew what I didn’t want to do. I was clear that I wouldn’t be able to come up with latka-jhatka type of songs.
“I wasn’t sure if being ‘different’ would work for me. It was an experiment. But when my songsHunter and Dil Chi Cha Leather became popular, I knew that I was on the right track. Even now, I fear falling prey to monotony.”
