For old times’ sake

Few things would beat a lazy Sunday afternoon spent watching old Hindi films, relieving the golden era of the Hindi film industry when the term Bollywood was yet to be coined. Television channels carrying dedicated retrospectives of bygone stars such as Shammi Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand and so on the weekend slot is proof of the fact that the Indian janta loves its old heroes and their philams. While some movies are a treat throughout the year, there are some that are cut out for the Sunday afternoon experience.

For television actor Vishal Malhotra, who plays Dr Ranganath in Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, Half Ticket and Andaaz Apna Apna are the ultimate weekend feel good films. “I can never tire of them. Kishore Kumar has given one of his best comic performances in Half Ticket. And Andaaz Apna Apna is for obvious reasons a cult comedy for anyone from my generation. No movie has been able to replicate that kind of humour,” he says. The actor owns a plush home theatre set, but nothing he believes, beats watching an old school classic on an old school television set. “I prefer watching my old favourites on a good old Onida or Blue Diamond,” he adds.
Television actress Manasi Parekh Gohil likes to delve into an older era. “A film like Pakeezah and Mughal-e-Azam make for ideal weekend viewing. An ideal Sunday afternoon for me is cooking an elaborate meal for my friends and then taking a cozy seat to catch a classic,” she says.
For actor Karan Wahi however, the experience is a lot more elaborate. The young actor likes to make sure that apart from having his favourite movie in the player, the rest of the ambience is also just as perfect. “I am a Batman fan and I hope to catch the Dark Knight Rises this weekend. Hot home cooked-food and popcorn are a must when I sit down to watch a movie. And needless to says, it has to be played on my latest proud possession — a home theatre system with my friends around,” he says.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
